Acrylamide is a significant organic chemical raw material with diverse applications. It is predominantly utilized in the production of water-soluble polymers, specifically polyacrylamide copolymers. Currently, over 80% of acrylamide monomer consumption in China is dedicated to the synthesis of polyacrylamide copolymer. A smaller fraction is employed to create lipophilic polymers that form permeable hydrophilic centers, enhancing adhesive strength and improving softening points and solvent resistance; additionally, it serves as a crosslinker for vinyl polymers. Among the products synthesized from acrylamide as a monomer, polyacrylamide (PAM) stands out as the most extensively used variant. Polyacrylamide functions as a flocculant, thickener, and enhancer across various sectors including oil extraction, coal mining, geology, metallurgy, textiles and chemicals, civil engineering, and agriculture among others. Notably within the petroleum industry, polyacrylamide acts as an injected fluid into oil wells capable of recovering up to two-thirds of underground oil from deep wells that conventional recovery methods cannot access (Enhanced Oil Recovery technology), thereby significantly increasing the oil recovery rate per well.
